Our Programmes
Sustainable livelihood programme
1. INUA PATO PROGRAM
INUA is a Kiswahili word meaning lift , while pato is income. This program, in line with the United Nations sustainable development goal to end poverty, acts to end poverty through providing training, loans and practical skills to empower poor youth and women living in Kibera economicaly.
This is achieved through table banking. We have formed groups in which members save and borrow money immediately during meeting times. Each group has 20 members who contribute an average of Ksh.150 per meeting each week. The total money contributed in every meeting is disbursed as loans to members to be paid back in installments.
These loans are used as capital to start and run small scale businesses. Most of the memebers are vegetable vendors , hair dressers , barbers and run local shops in our community. Currently we have 200 groups in this program.
2. ENTREPRENEURSHIP TRAINING
We have monthly entrepreneurship training on business management and basic financial skills to empower the beneficiaries make informed business decisions and run profitable business.
Education programme
SOMESHA PROGRAM
Somesha is a Kiswahili word meaning to educate. Somesha program is focusing on improving access to trainings and education for the beneficiaries.Through this program we have been able to achieve this:
1.Primary school learning program:
We believe in upholding children rights, especially the right to education .We run a free primary school based on the Kenya’s ministry of education guidelines and education policies. We enroll orphans and vulnerable children from the age of 6 to 15 years living in Kibera. We provide them with school uniform, meals and stationery.
By providing meals we ensure that the children are healthy due to the provision of a daily balanced diet.Through this program, the children are protected from exploitation and child labour that results when they are not in school.We also raise their literacy level by imparting reading and writing skills.Since inception the school has benefited over 3000 children living in Kibera.
2. Secondary School:
Despite government efforts to subsidise high school education, the transition from primary to high school is still low in Kibera. Most parents and guardians living below the poverty line are unable to afford the reduced school fees resulting in school dropouts and the youth are forced to look for informal jobs. If they are unable to find jobs they are forced by circumstances to turn into crime and prostitution.
It is this situation that led to the establishment of the Migori education centre girls high school that offers secondary education to bright and vulnerable girls. Our goal is to improve the access to high school education,school attendance and academic performance.
Lack of opportunity for further education and skills deficit is one of the contributing factors to youth unemployment and poverty among the youth living in Kibera.
This program targets the youth locked out of formal education. We conduct skills transfer trainings to enable participants start and run informal businesses. The trainings include hairdressing, making necklaces and jewellery from beads, photography, cooking classes, event decoration, gardening, and housekeeping skills.
This program helps the beneficiaries get sustainable income by making them self reliant. With the help of partners after going through the program they undergo apprenticeship.
4. College/institute sponsorship:
Our Sponsorship program provides access to higher education. The youth are sponsored for technical courses, college and university education.
Girls empowerment Programme
1. GIRLS MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
Our mentorship program targets girls aged between 12 and 18 years. They are taken through sessions on sexual reproductive health, Gender based violence and FGM Awareness.
The impact of the program is reduced teenage pregnancies, sex working, drug abuse. Empowered girls are able to make better decisions for themselves despite the predominant culture in their community.
2. RESCUE A SISTER PROGRAM
Rescue a sister project is an outreach program aimed at reaching out and helping victims of gender based violence and rape.
Rescue a sister program focuses on rescue, rehabilitation and rebuilding of broken relationships between the beneficiaries and our community.
This program primarily focuses on reforming the beneficiaries through counseling and healing.The program achieves its goals through transformation workshops, trainings, exchange programs, and referrals for special cases.
Through our annual Miss Kibera pageant festivals, we strive to build girls’ self esteem. The festival also empowers more girls to become our ambassadors and advocates who will continue creating awareness on the girl child issues.
Sports & Art for social change programme
The program nurtures and develops the various talents within the youth living in Kibera. With the help of volunteers,we provide training and coaching in painting murals, spoken word, acrobatics, football, acting, music, drawing and making artifacts. We have established both girls and boys football teams in different categories of junior and senior teams.
Over time Kibera Hamlets has great strength in plays, traditional and modern dances, poetry, puppetry music and acrobatics. Our teams usually perform in public functions hence earning stipend for themselves.
Kibera Hamlets believes sports fosters peace and easily mobilizes communities therefore through sports and we create awareness in the Kibera community on peace and violence prevention, gender based violence, early marriages drug abuse, sanitation & environment, crime prevention, children trafficking (child labour) ,HIV and community service.
Environment conservation programme
This project is aimed at creating a healthier and more sustainable environment for human life in the slum.
In order to achieve these objectives, Kibera Hamlets has set up the following project:
1.Recycling: The youth Engage in environmental clean ups garbage collections in recycling of waste plastic materials and helps keep our environment clean and at the same time create a source of income to the youth within the community.
2.Forest Conservation: Through tree planting activities within the society
3.Public awareness:Though community outreach performances in dances poetry narrative community theatre the community is empowered on the essence of conserving the environment hence creating a conducive environment.
